For individuals living with type 2 diabetes, exercise is not only about burning calories or losing weight. In many cases, physical activity directly impacts how the body processes and utilizes glucose at the muscular level.
Research has shown that skeletal muscle plays a major role in glucose uptake, making movement one of the most effective non-pharmaceutical tools for improving blood sugar management. During and after exercise, muscles can increase glucose utilization and improve insulin sensitivity, helping the body regulate blood sugar more efficiently.
What’s particularly interesting is that these benefits can occur both acutely and chronically. A single bout of exercise may temporarily improve glucose control, while long-term training can lead to lasting improvements in metabolic health, cardiovascular fitness, body composition, and overall function.
Different forms of exercise also produce different physiological responses. Aerobic training has been associated with improvements in cardiovascular endurance and glucose regulation, while resistance training may help improve muscular strength, glucose storage capacity, and insulin action. Current research increasingly supports combining both forms of training for individuals with type 2 diabetes.
At the same time, exercise programming for this population requires thoughtful consideration. Factors such as neuropathy, cardiovascular risk, medication timing, blood glucose fluctuations, balance concerns, and exercise intensity can all influence safety and outcomes.
